I agree with other reviewers that the current installment in this series is an improvement, but still feels somewhat stilted and lacking in historic details and atmosphere (settings, dress, mannerisms, etc.) I’ve read every entry in the series but stopped purchasing about four books ago; I borrow them from the library because I feel the series has become sterile and predictable. In the first books in the series Thompson created a darker, grittier atmosphere where the seedy underside of New York tenement life came alive; the growing awareness between Sarah and Frank felt passionate and real, as did the seemingly insurmountable obstacles they would face if they acted on that forbidden attraction. Not so lately; they even end this book sitting side-by-side on a park bench like two old married folks! Nothing wrong with that, but they really used to spark off of each other; Thompson made you feel both Frank’s loneliness and longing for the well-born and seemingly unobtainable Sarah, and Sarah’s forbidden attraction to the handsome, virile, tough-yet-decent Irish Catholic cop of whom her family would NEVER approve. As another reviewer wisely commented here, Thompson needs to listen to her readers and bring back that spark and move the romantic storyline along to keep the series believable. It can be (and has been) done, i.e., Elizabeth Peters’ long-lived Amelia Peabody and Emerson mystery series – a married couple passionate about their work and each other, interesting mysteries, historical accuracy, humor, warmth – not every book was perfect, but a great example of how to move a series along enjoyably.

Dyestuffs approved have special names with a prefix! (FD & C, D & C Ext. D & C) followed by a number. For example: FD & C Yellow No. 6 that you often find in cereal, ice cream and pastries. Sometimes they use a shorthand designations such as color and number (Yellow 6).

The second largest category of dyes are “exempt” tests required for approval, because they are derived from plant sources, animal or mineral. For example, caramel color or grape extracts. Are exempt from the tests necessary for approval, but they are all artificial dyes that must satisfy the standard in terms of their use.

Dyes for tattoos and permanent makeup don’t have FDA approval

If a dye is approved and can be used in a product does not mean that it can be added to other products. For example, no dye has been approved to be injected into the skin, although tattoo parlors ensure that the ink pigments used are “FDA approval”, according to information given on the official site of the FDA. Also, there are references to the fact that no dye has not received the necessary approval to be used in permanent makeup. And, Henna is approved only for hair products, not on the skin.

Adverse reactions to dyes are pretty rare. For example, FD & C Yellow No. 5 can cause hives and itching sensations in some people. This dye is found in drinks, desserts, processed vegetables, drugs, cosmetics and more. FDA requirements are clear: products that contain this dye must specify it in the list of ingredients.

Mineral make-up has been labeled the ‘new craze in town’, the ‘ latest revelation in make-up’ and the ‘ trend of the year’. In actual fact, mineral make-up has been around for about three-thousand years, dating back to the Egyptian Pharaohs.

Nowadays, women (and men) from all over the world are throwing away their clumpy old fluid foundations and opting for what has proven to work better in the past. As a race, we are foolish to think that we have invented the wonder of mineral make-up.

We are simply learning by our mistakes and going back to basics, mirroring the actions of our ancestors. We are constantly reminded what is omitted from mineral make-up, but what exactly is in it? Realistically, you can make your own mineral make-up foundation at home, it’s that basic. You will need;

• 1/3 tsp. Titanium Dioxide
• 1/3 tsp. Zinc Oxide
• 1/3 tsp. Boron Nitride
• 1/3 tsp. Facial Silk
• 1/2 tsp. Chamomile Matte Mica
• 1/8 tsp. Chestnut Brown Mica
• 1/16 tsp. Red Oxide #150
• 1/32 tsp. Brown Oxide
• 3 tsp. White Matte Mica
• Mortar and Pestle

Slowly add the ingredients one by one and blend thoroughly with the pestle and morter. You may have to adjust the recipe slightly to suit your skin tone. Blend the ingredients together for at least three minutes, allowing the particles of each ingredient to disperse evenly.

As I mentioned before, you will have to adjust the recipe to match your skin tone. This may take a lot of mixing and wasting of time and money. For this reason, it is far better, far easier and almost the same price overall to simply purchase a product from your local salon, store or online store.

Each and every brand carry a variety of shades, offering the correct shade for all skin tones. Even though we choose to purchase mineral make-up as opposed to creating it ourselves, we are still guarenteed that it consists only of  basic, natural, earthy ingredients. 

History give us direction, advice and leads us the way. We learn and are guided by our ancestors and their actions. This too is demonstrated in the beauty industry.

Opting to omit harsh chemicals and use only natural, basic ingredients is not something which we can take credit for, but we can by all means enjoy the feeling of barely there make-up, with the same amount of coverage. Mineral make-up has always been here, but now its here to stay.
